The Nor West Jockey Club stands as the foremost thoroughbred racing venue in the Pilbara region, renowned for curating unparalleled events that promise unforgettable experiences. With distinctive amenities not replicated elsewhere in the Pilbara, including a dedicated two-story members marquee equipped with its own bar, TAB, courtyard, and amenities, the club ensures a premium experience for all attendees. Since 1867, horse racing in Roebourne has stood as an annual social highlight, attracting participants and spectators from across Australia. Initially held on the left side of Cossack Road, the races found their permanent home in 1890 at the present Nor-West Jockey Club site.
The Nor West Jockey Club Roebourne Racecourse, the second oldest race club in Western Australia, hosts four race meetings annually in June and July. Situated just one kilometer east of Roebourne township, the racecourse features full bar and catering facilities, TAB, bookmakers, live entertainment, and traditional two-up sessions after each major race day.
The track is a dirt tack built on pindan and crabhole country at the East side of the Harding river catchment. It is 2000 metres with a 400 metre straight approximately 18 metres wide and an inside running rail the full circumference of the track which was installed in 2004 with 3 chutes on a flat surface and a 12 horse stating gates which was purchased in the mid 1970s.
Located on Roecup Rd, 2 km East of Roebourne alongside the North West Coastal Highway opposite the Roebourne Aerodrome, which used to be the Roebourne Airport before Karratha was built.
Now, over 150 years later, the Roebourne Races remain as popular as ever, with the NWJC operating as a Not For Profit organization, driven by the dedication of local volunteers committed to preserving the racing heritage of the Pilbara.
The 2024 NWJC Committee proudly presents the 157th year of the Roebourne Races and celebrates the 134th year at the current Roebourne Racetrack location. These race meetings form an integral part of the Pilbara race round, starting in late May in Port Hedland and concluding in August in Newman.
